While experiencing erectile dysfunction can be frustrating, you’re not alone. As they age, many men experience difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. Finding the medical cause of this issue can help determine the best treatment. If you are experiencing erectile dysfunction, it’s important to have a medical examination as it can signal a larger problem.
Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
While all men experience this problem occasionally, an appointment is necessary if it is ongoing. Most often, chronic erectile dysfunction is attributed to cardiac issues such as high blood pressure, clogged arteries, high cholesterol, heart disease, or metabolic syndrome; diabetes; obesity; substance abuse; Parkinson’s disease; multiple sclerosis; or sleep disorders. In addition, erectile dysfunction is sometimes caused by mental conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or stress.
Diagnosis of Erectile Dysfunction
In order to diagnose the underlying issue that is causing erectile dysfunction, our medical staff will take a full medical history and perform a physical exam. We may also recommend laboratory tests that check for levels of testosterone, blood counts, urinalysis, lipid profile, and creatinine and liver enzymes. Psychological evaluation may be done if the doctor suspects that there is no physical basis for erectile dysfunction. In this case, therapy often effectively resolves the issue.
Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction
After determining the potential cause of erectile dysfunction, lifestyle changes may be recommended to address the issue. These can include losing weight, eating a more nutritious diet, getting proper exercise, and cutting down on alcohol and tobacco. If these measures do not make a difference, medical treatment options are available. These may include oral medications that increase blood flow to the penis and allow for an erection in response to stimulation.
For those men whose erectile dysfunction is hormonal, testosterone replacement may be effective. If these medications are ineffective, a medication that can be injected into the penis or taken as a suppository may be prescribed, causing an erection that lasts for about an hour at a time. Some men also have success with medical devices such as a penis pump or implant that can be inflated to cause an erection, but these are typically the last resort when other treatments have failed.
